The Paper Industry Technical Association (PITA) was inaugurated in 1920 and is amongst the oldest Technical Associations serving the Fibrous Forest Products Sectors, with an international membership which spans over forty papermaking countries around the globe.

The Association operates as an independent organisation for the general benefit of its members – both individual and corporate – dedicated to promoting and improving the technical and scientific knowledge of those working in the Global Pulp, Paper, Board, Moulded Pulp and Particleboard industries. Based in the UK, it serves these industries, both manufacturers and suppliers, by providing a forum for members to meet and network; it organises visits, conferences and training seminars that cover all aspects of papermaking science and the issues surrounding products produced from cellulose fibre.

In addition to the above, recently the Association has taken a leading role with three UK Government-funded research projects. The first involved work on “Digital Twinning”, which has achieved a 7-8% reduction in steam usage in the dryers, with a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and energy costs. This project has won the Gold Sustainable Innovation Award in May 2022 (UK), at the Constantinus Awards in October 2023 (Austria) and the Technologie Kring Award in November 2023 (Netherlands). The second, a much larger project (“HiFib”), involves looking at methods of producing highly-fibrillated cellulose fibres from sources of fibre readily-available in the UK. Digital Twinning or Highly Fibrillated Fibres – in both projects PITA is working on ideas that will be of immediate, practical benefit to our members. The third involved an initial look at Recyclability of Barrier Coatings with Brunel University.

Finally, PITA publishes and distributes the prestigious journals Paper Technology International® and the PITA Annual Review, both sent free to members, and a range of other technical publications that include the free-of-charge digital journal PAPERmaking!, conference proceedings, and the acclaimed book Essential Guide to Aqueous Coating of Paper and Board.
